RECOGNIZING THE FLAG OF THE REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM AS THE HERITAGE AND FREEDOM FLAG OF THE VIETNAMESE-AMERICAN COMMUNITY OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU.
WHEREAS, the City and County of Honolulu is the residence of many ethnic
cultures from around the world, making it a “melting pot” of such cultures;
and
WHEREAS, many ethnic Vietnamese who came to this city from Vietnam in the
1960s and 1970s are now naturalized American citizens; and
WHEREAS, although they are citizens, the Vietnamese in this city still wish to
preserve their own culture and heritage; and
WHEREAS, the Vietnamese in Honolulu have for generations contributed and will continue to
contribute to the City’s economic welfare and diverse cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam, which consists of three
horizontal stripes of gules, a red color, on a field of gold, symbolizes
for the Vietnamese their ethnic culture and heritage and their economic contribution to
this city, and is the preferred symbol of the city’s Vietnamese-American community; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City and County of Honolulu
that it recognize the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam, to be
known as the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag, as the symbol of the
Vietnamese-American community and its cultural and economic contributions to the City and County
of Honolulu; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the
Mayor and the American-Vietnamese Coalition of Hawaii.
